The North

Wondering what to explore in the North?

The north is home to magnificent beaches: Péreybère, Mont Choisy, Trou aux Biches, Cap Malheureux, Pointe aux Canonniers, and Bain Boeuf, are all idyllic places that invite you to unwind, snorkel or enjoy water sports, in a sheltered coastline. In the late afternoon, don’t forget the breathtaking sunsets.

In Cap Malheureux, a charming fishing village at the extreme north of the island, Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice, the picturesque church known as the “red-roofed church,” is a place to discover. This iconic church is famous for its location near the beach, which stands out beautifully in contrast with the lagoon and the Serpent Island in the background. When visiting this area, you may encounter local fishermen proudly displaying the fresh catch of the day. Local grills to the sound of the sea, with refreshing tastes can be arranged. Mingling with the inhabitants adds a sense of authenticity to the local sensory flavour! An experience to remember and share.

If you are looking for a nice walk, go to Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, one of the oldest and most famous botanical gardens in the world. It offers a captivating and immersive experience for visitors, showcasing Mauritius’ unique flora as you wander through shaded pathways, admire giant water lily ponds, and perhaps even encounter a Talipot in bloom – a rare event that occurs every few decades.

Interested in the local history, which is linked to the sugar cane industry? “L’Aventure du Sucre”, The Sugar Adventure, is a museum and cultural attraction located in Beau Plan. It offers a fascinating and immersive experience that delves into the history linked to the colonial heritage of the Island and its enriching melting pot heritage. There, you can enjoy sweet treats from fresh produced tropical fruits, rum tasting, and revisited local dishes.

To end this immersion into the Mauritian heritage, just a few minutes away, a visit to the Domaine de Labourdonnais, the northern Castle in Mapou, is a must-do. This Restored Victorian mansion on a sugarcane plantation is one of an attractive cultural place to visit. The whole estate, especially the Château, constitutes a real immersion in the 19th-century art of living, which has been metamorphosed into a museum, that offers visitors a glimpse of the island’s colonial history, architecture, and lush gardens. The Château invites visitors to discover a cultural place where history, nature, gastronomy, and Mauritian know-how come together.

For the most adventurous, Goodlands is a medium-sized town in northern Mauritius located in Rivière du Rempart District. It is the place to go for a folk shopping day and good deals. Goodlands is indeed known for its markets, or ‘fairs’ as we say here, filled with fruits and local vegetables, textiles, and other odds at low prices. You will be spoiled with choice over the alley of outfits, shirts, shoes, and local souvenirs.

While exploring this place, we recommend you to check-out Grand Gaube, Butte à l’herbe and Anse la Raie, known for its kitesurfing schools and mangrove.

Other centre of interest nearby and accessible by boat, uncrowded coral formed Island natural experience away from the public beaches is Bernache Island, an idyllic option to relink with yourself and with your close ones.
